*County Wide Burn Ban*
This ban is effective beginning at 9:00AM on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 and will remain in effect until the area receives a significant amount of rainfall that decreases fire risk, at which time the ban shall be lifted. A violation of this ban is a Class 1 misdemeanor punishable by confinement of up to 12 months in jail and/or up to a $2500 fine.

Burning Laws in Brief
No burning until after 4:00 p.m. February 15 through April 30 of each year, if the fire is in or within 300 feet of woodland, brushland or field containing dry grass or other flammable material.
Fire shall not be left unattended if within 150 feet of woodland, brushland or fields containing dry grass.
No new fires set or fuel added after midnight.
Law applies to campfires, warming fires, brush piles, leaves, household trash, stumps, fields of broomstraw and brush or anything capable of spreading fire.
The law provides for a penalty of up to $500, plus payment of court costs and fire suppression costs if the fire escapes.12/30/2018

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day
The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, Saturday 10/28/2017 from 10am-2pm, addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue. According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. The DEA’s Take Back Day events provide an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths. Free Seasonal Flu Vaccine
The West Piedmont Health District (WPHD) will offer free
seasonal flu vaccine at a special drive-thru clinic on Thursday, Oct. 19 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Scruggs Fire Department & Rescue Squad (2130 Bluewater Drive, Moneta, VA 24121).
Only 250 doses of injectable vaccine will be available and will only be offered to adults 18 years and older on a first-come, first-served basis. Be sure to wear clothing that is loose around the arm so that a public health nurse can give you the flu shot in your upper arm, while you enjoy the comfort and convenience of your vehicle. Please do not have pets in the vehicle (controlled service animals are allowed).

County wide Burn Ban Update
As a result of the significant rainfall received throughout the county, the Fire Marshal’s office will lift the ban on all open air outdoor burning at 4:00pm on December 6, 2016.

Forestwide Ban - Order # 04-08-17
A fire ban is in effect for the entire George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. The following are prohibited:
Building, maintaining or using a fire outside of developed recreation sites, such as campgrounds and day use areas.
Smoking except within enclosed vehicles or buildings, in developed recreation areas, or in areas cleared of all flammable material at least 3 feet in diameter.
Open fires at any dispersed area or shelter along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.
Campstoves that use liquid or gas fuels are permitted. Fire ban will remain in effect from November 15, 2016 until February 1, 2017.
